Leveraging a unique approach to collage and a focus on the landscape as his current vehicle for expression, Jay creates rhythmic, textural paintings that exploit color and calligraphy to provide emotional content and a sense of mystery. Firmly based in the post-modern and drawing on the past century of techniques and movements, the work displays both detailed draftsmanship and a sense of playfulness.
“Embracing visual art as a refuge against mediocrity, intent on craft and learning the elements of design as a underpinning for lasting works, I am drawn to the visual to convey emotions, each series depicting my belief in artistic endeavor as a fundamental value of the human spirit. Influenced by the Impressionists, the Fauvists, and that quintessential American artistic movement of the 20th Century, the Abstract Expressionists, my work seeks to reflect elements of these innovators while creating a new visual symbolism and vocabulary: Art as communication with the soul, art as motivation for vision and direction, art as a reflection of emotion and ultimately, the challenge to grow beyond the mass produced images found everywhere to find a unique, evocative voice.”
